A Personal Letter to Widows

See It On:
With G-d's Great Help - ב"ה

Dear Madam,

I share in your pain. I cannot imagine what it is like to lose someone who you love and share a lifetime with.

I have some words of advice and encouragement for you.

Your loved one is in the heavens, they have passed on to other worlds now, yet they are always with you. The cliché is that they are 'in a better place'. This is true. From the teachings of our sages, we learn that grief is a healthy reaction to loss, yet you must know that your loved ones are not lost. Quite the opposite- they have found their final resting place. I know it is difficult to hear, but you must try to be happy for them.

I have some advice for you regarding your own lives. It is important for you to seek help from friends and relatives, spend much time surrounded by loved ones.

It is important for you to ask for help if you need it, emotional, physical, financial- it is a big Mitzvah for people to help you, so do not be shy about asking.

Try to take care of your health. Do not neglect yourself. Eat healthy and keep active. Swimming and walking are excellent ways to keep active and healthy, and even meet new friends. Join groups of art, dancing and follow any interests you have. You are still alive and it is important that you 'live life to the fullest.'

I would like to mention the issue of lighting candles. This is an important Mitzvah to elevate the Neshama (soul) of your loved ones and other souls. Please light Shabbat candles every Shabbat with the blessing, and memory candles as often as you can.

Again, I would like to say that I share in your pain.

Be well and G-d bless you. May you be healthy and happy.

Amen
